On 26 July 2014, the regional law of 16 May 2014, on the establishment of a human rights ombudsman for the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, was published in the Official Journal of the autonomous region.

The law foresees that the "Garante regionale" will defend the rights of children and adolescents, of persons deprived of their liberty, and of people at risk of discrimination, in conformity with international, European, and national norms.

The Garante regionale will be elected for a period of five years, renewable once, and will exercise its functions in complete independence.
