The European Region of the IOI held its quadrennial Conference and General Assembly in Brussels from 1 – 3 October 2018. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the event was hosted by the Federal Ombudsman of Belgium, Catherine De Bruecker and Guido Herman, and their office.

A pesar de que los instrumentos Internacionales de protección de Derechos Humanos reconocen el derecho de las personas privadas de libertad a cumplir la pena en establecimientos cercanos a la residencia de su familia y al lugar de asiento de su tribunal y de su defensor; en Argentina no existe una regulación específica que contemple las formas de notificación de los traslados, las causales y vías de impugnación. Por ello, la mayoría de los traslados los resuelve el SPF de forma discrecional, arbitraria e intempestiva y en muchos casos, sin notificación ni control judicial.

The Ombudsman investigated, upon his own initiative, three issues arising from the Department for Correctional Services’ (the department) handling of a prisoner with type 1 diabetes. The investigation was instigated on the basis of information received from the Office of the Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner.

The Turkish Ombudsman published its special report on Syrian refugees and asked to have this report distributed. The report examines the issue of Syrian Refugees in Turkey in detail, by studying the problem, researching the studies already made and proposing the necessary solutions.
