Elmira Suleymanova, the Commissioner for Human Rights attended conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic co-organized by State Committee for Family, Women and Child Issues and Ganja City Executive Power in Ganja. She made a presentation on “The Right to Vote is the Fundamental Human Right”.
Touching the historical role of ‘Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the development of the Azerbaijani people, E. Suleymanova noted that the Republic was the first country in the East, even among some European countries that recognized the equal rights of all citizens, the right of women to vote equally with men, the inadmissibility of discrimination and the empowerment of women with equal rights.
The Commissioner said that after the restoration of the independence in Azerbaijan important measures have been taken in the field of human rights, the first Constitution of Azerbaijan adopted in 1995 guarantees that all citizens, including women and they have the right to vote.
She added that strategic documents-The "State Program on the Protection of Human Rights, National Action Plan for the Protection of Human Rights in the Republic of Azerbaijan and National Action Program on improving the effectiveness of human rights and freedoms in the Republic of Azerbaijan plays a major role in empowerment of women and their participation in decision-making levels.
