On Tuesday 8 January IOI President and Irish Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the UK Parliament’s Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee. Mr Tyndall was giving his observations on the performance of the UK Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.  This followed a peer review of the PHSO which Mr Tyndall chaired with Caroline Mitchell (Lead Ombudsman Financial Ombudsman Service) and Chris Gill (lecturer, University of Glasgow).

The Human Rights Defender published a Concept document on Combating Criminal Subculture in Penitentiary Institutions of the Ministry of Justice in the form of an ad hoc thematic report. The Criminal Subculture (informal prison hierarchy) in Penitentiary Institutions and its impact on the relations between persons deprived of liberty and on the penitentiary system have been comprehensively reviewed and monitored by using special tools and criteria.

The Control Yuan organized the “2018 Workshop on the Rights of People with Disabilities” on December 7, gathering together representatives of people with disabilities, relevant government agencies and civil organizations, as well as expert scholars in related fields to discuss ways of fostering a disability-friendly environment so as to enhance protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

This year, Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass prepared a video of the “2018 year in review” presenting the nine investigation reports tabled by the Victorian Ombudsman throughout the year.

The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, His Excellency, Brigadier Retired Julius Maada Bio, appointed on the 23^th October 2018 the Lawyer Mr. Leon Jenkins-Johnston as the New Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

During 20 – 21 November 2018, General Viddhavat Rajatanun, Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, and Mr. Boon Tapanadul, Ombudsman, as well as Mr. Raksagecha Chaechai, Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman and executives, welcomed the delegation from the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) of the Republic of Korea, led by Mr. Kwon Kunsang, Director-General of the Ombudsman Bureau.
