From 15 to 18 May, eight MEPs will travel to Romania speak with government officials, local authorities and residents, NGOs and other experts on environmental issues.
To investigate issues raised by several petitioners -illegal logging and the management and protection of the brown bear population- a group of eights MEPs will travel to Bucharest, Sfântu Gheorghe and Suceava in Romania.
They will first hold meetings with Mr Barna Tánczos, the Romanian Minister of Environment, Water and Forests; officials at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General’s Office; and local NGOs in Bucharest. Then, MEPs will travel to Sfântu Gheorghe in Central Romania to discuss the management of local brown bear populations with petitioners and local authorities, and discuss forest management with NGOs, local businesses and farmers’ representatives. Finally, they will visit the city of Suceava to learn more about deforestation and illegal logging, meeting petitioners, journalists, NGOs and experts, as well as local authorities and law enforcement.
The visit will conclude with a press conference at the Mandachi Hotel & SPA (Blvd Sofia Vicoveanca, Nr. 107, Suceava) on Thursday from 9.30 to 10.30 EEST.
