In a public hearing on Tuesday, MEPs and guest experts discuss current issues within the Schengen free-movement area, including border controls.

Numerous petitions have highlighted issues related to the Schengen area, including border controls between participating countries and delays in the accession of EU member states.
In the public hearing organised by the Committee on Petitions in association with the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, MEPs will discuss the historical context and current issues in two thematic panels featuring the following guest experts:
Panel 1. Schengen historical background and current state of the play
- Ms Corinna ULLRICH, Head of Unit, DG HOME, European Commission
- Dr Stefan SALOMON, University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Humanities European Studies
Panel 2. Internal border controls - issues raised by petitioners
- Professor Elspeth GUILD, Jean Monnet Professor ad personam at Queen Mary University of London and at the Radboud University Nijmegen
- Dr Fabian GÜLZAU, Researcher at SVR-Migration, Berlin
