The Commissioner for Education, Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent De Gaetano, launched an outreach initiative by the Office of the Ombudsman aimed at enhancing the civic knowledge of students attending Church schools. This initiative will see the organisation of interactive talks for Year 10, 11, and Sixth Form students to deepen their understanding of governance and civic responsibilities.

The first of the series of talks was held at St. Monica’s School in Gzira, where the Commissioner engaged with Form 4 students studying European Studies and Environmental Studies.

The session offered an in-depth look at the Ombudsman’s role and functions, highlighting its pivotal role as a mediator between the public and public institutions. The aim was to clarify the role of the Ombudsman in ensuring fairness and justice in public administration.

The Rule of Law and the Right to Good Administration are significant aspects of these talks. The focus here is on informing students of their rights and duties, the significance of a transparent and accountable public sector, and the imperative to uphold democratic values and efficient governance.
