The Commissioner for Education within the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent A. De Gaetano, has been elected to the Board of Directors of ROLE, a non-profit Rule of Law Empowerment Association incorporated and registered under French Law. The Association’s objective is the promotion and defence of human rights and the rule of law in Europe and Central Asia.

The Commissioner, who served as Judge elected in respect of Malta on the European Court of Human Rights from 2010 to 2019, joins four other members on the Board: Dr Ksenja Turković, a former judge of the ECtHR, who was also elected chairperson of the Board; Dr Aharon Barak, former Attorney General and former President of the Supreme Court of Israel; and two human rights activists of international repute Ms Anya Verkhovskaya and Dr Yervand Shirinyan. The appointment of all five is for a period of three years from the 25th of June 2024.

Chief Justice De Gaetano’s election was made possible after clearance was obtained according to law from the Speaker of the House of Representatives in November of last year.
