(EP PETI) EU border security: MEPs travel to Barbate and Algeciras

From 26 to 28 May 2025, a delegation of nine MEPs will visit the coast of south-western Andalusia to assess the working conditions of state security forces operating there.

A delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions, led by its chair Bogdan Rzońca (ECR, PL), will visit Barbate (Cádiz), on 26 May. They will meet petitioners who are seeking better conditions, and the families of two civil guards killed during an operation to apprehend a boat carrying drugs on 9 February 2024.

On 27 May in Algeciras (Cádiz), MEPs will meet with members of the security forces, as well as institutional and operational representatives involved in combating organised crime and drug trafficking in the region and beyond. They will also inspect the port of Algeciras to assess its facilities and the operational capacity of authorities patrolling the coast.

The visit will conclude on 28 May in Seville, where the delegation will meet with representatives of the national and regional government.

Press moments

On Monday 26 May at 18.00, the chair of the delegation, Bogdan Rzońca, and the Mayor of Barbate, Miguel Molina Chamorro, will hold a press point at Barbate Town Hall.

On Tuesday 27 May at 09.00, Bogdan Rzońca will address the press at Algeciras Town Hall with the Mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce.

To take full stock of the visit, on Wednesday 28 May at 14.15, chair Bogdan Rzońca will hold a press conference at the Ministry of the Interior of the Junta de Andalucía (Calle Inca Garcilaso 1, Edificio Expo, Seville).
