FRA National Parliamentary Focal Points explored ways of better leveraging the Agency’s work in efforts to promote and protect fundamental rights in their countries when they met in Vienna on 26–27 February.

Concrete examples of potential forms of closer cooperation included joint events in national capitals, FRA experts presenting to national parliamentary committees where fundamental rights are discussed, and engaging with the network of permanent representatives of national parliaments in Brussels. Focal points also expressed interest in meeting the national representatives of the network of FRA stakeholders in their home country and in taking part in the meeting of networks in November in Vienna. The key role of national parliaments in shaping EU legislation and in ensuring that such legislation complies with national constitutional rights was underlined. In this, FRA work is useful for national legislators as it can feed into both processes. To this end focal points will work towards increasing awareness among Members of Parliament on the importance of a fundamental rights check when drafting, amending and acting on national laws and policies.Examples of existing cooperation with national parliaments were also presented as models for other parliamentary representatives to follow. The focal points were created in order to further strengthen FRA’s tie to national parliaments in the EU Member States. The meeting enabled FRA to have a deeper understanding of how to further feed into the work of national parliaments while at the same time explain how FRA operates and the relevance of its evidence-based work to Member States.FRA will now use the feedback to explore how best to extend the Agency’s outreach to Member States.
