The Seimas Ombudsmen met the Ombudsperson of Equal Opportunities at the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office

The newly appointed Ombudsperson of Equal Opportunities, Agneta Lobačevskytė, seeks to improve the activity of Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson's Office by gaining more experience from the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office, which was called exemplary in tackling human rights problems.

On 15 July 2015, the Ombudsperson of Equal Opportunities met with the Seimas Ombudsmen Augustinas Normantas and Raimondas Šukys at the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office and discussed cooperation opportunities in improving the activity of Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson's Office.

"Your institution is unique. The complaints are investigated thoroughly with clear and strong arguments, as well as sound reasoning, in written conclusions. We need to gain more experience from the Seimas Ombudsmen by devoting scrupulous attention to the quality of investigation of complaints and monitoring of the implementation of recommendations," she said.

The Ombudsperson of Equal Opportunities has voiced the hope for increased cooperation with the Seimas Ombudsmen in building awareness in society about human rights.

"The society should learn more about the activity of both institutions not only from the media but also from ourselves. Therefore, we want to organize more visits to different regions of Lithuania jointly with the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office," said the Ombudsperson of Equal Opportunities at the meeting.

The Seimas Ombudsmen A. Normantas and R. Šukys congratulated Ms. A. Lobačevskytė on her new appointment, wishing her every success in pursuing equal opportunities in Lithuania.

"We hope your intention to pursue the highest standards of public administration and the interinstitutional cooperation in paying attention to the quality of investigation of complaints will come true," expressed the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

More than a half (54%) of Lithuanian residents would know where to find protection against human rights violations. As many as 42% would seek help from the Seimas Ombudsmen. Those are the findings of a representative survey of the population commissioned by the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office carried out at the end of last year.

The survey has revealed that 42% of Lithuanian citizens would apply to the Seimas Ombudsmen for protection against human rights violations compared to 34.5% in 2013 and just 24.3% in 2012.
