Main findings of the Croatian National Report, a part of ENNHRI project on human rights of older persons and long term care, were presented on October 5th 2016 to stakeholders in Zadar, one of the largest cities in the south of Croatia. The presentation gathered staff from the homes for the elderly, representatives of local and regional autonomy, non-governmental organizations and of educational system.
The advisors of the Ombudswoman explained how the project included a review of national legislation and policies, as well as unannounced visits to care homes, with interviews with older persons and stakeholders. While presenting the level of implementation of human rights of particular importance for the older persons, they showed examples of breaches of the freedom of movement, right to privacy and to autonomy, as well as the right to the highest attainable standard of health. The lack of staff was noted, as well as the need to enhance their knowledge on human rights of older persons in long term care.
The presentation of the results of the Project's Pilot phase (monitorning) is one of the activities planned to promote the Project and present the existing level of human rights protection in the institutions monitored during the Project implementation.
