ISRAEL | International online conference - "Advancing the Rights of Older People in an Age of Longevity", 1 December 2021, 14:00 - 18:30 (CET)

This is a reminder to register for this international online conference, held under the auspices of the IOI and the AOM on 1 December 2021, where we will discuss the unique challenges facing ombuds institutions throughout the world pertaining to upholding and advancing the rights of older people.

AFRICA | New Directors and Regional President elected

The African Region of the IOI held elections to fill the vacant positions of two African Directors on the IOI Board of Directors as well as the Regional President of IOI Africa. The African Region of the IOI is now full represented by four Directors, as stipulated in the IOI By-laws.

CYPRUS | Ombudsman publishes Guide of Prisoner’s First Contact

The Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman) published a Guide of Prisoner’s First Contact in English and in Greek. This publication was prepared by the Ombudsman in cooperation with lawyers of the Association of the Protection of the Rights of Prisoners & Ex-Prisoners and it takes in consideration the real experiences gained from persons who remained in custody either as detainees pending trial or convicts in the Central Prisons of the Republic of Cyprus.

TAIWÁN | Foro de intercambio sobre la equidad de la vivienda para los jóvenes

El 6 de septiembre de 2021, la Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos (NHRC, por sus siglas en inglés) del Yuan de Control llevó a cabo un foro de intercambio sobre la equidad de la vivienda para los jóvenes. Entre los participantes en este estuvieron todos los miembros de la NHRC, expertos, jóvenes y grupos civiles que brindan atención a grupos vulnerables. 

BELGIQUE | Rapport spécifique sur le vieillissement en SRA

En 2019, la Commission parlementaire de l’Action sociale, de la Santé et de la Fonction publique, dans le cadre de l'examen de la pétition intitulée « Vieillir dignement : des moyens supplémentaires pour les personnes avec déficience intellectuelle en service résidentiel », avait décidé de soumettre au Médiateur celle-ci pour avis. Sur base des éléments en sa possession, le Médiateur a décidé d’ouvrir une enquête afin de rendre un avis qui fait sens, auprès des services spécialisés visés.

GHANA | CHRAJ calls for quick passage of Aged Bill

Joseph Whittal, the Commissioner of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has called for the quick passage of the Aged Bill into law to ensure the effective protection of the rights of the aged. Mr. Whittal made the call in Accra at a Round Table Meeting as part of activities to mark the International Day of Older Persons.

AUSTRALIA | NSW Ombudsman has tabled Annual Report 2020-21 in Parliament

The report, tabled by New South Wales (NSW) Ombudsman Paul Miller, discusses the 24,733 contacts received by the office, including detailed data and general observations about 13,315 actionable complaints. Together, these provide a picture of the issues faced by NSW citizens receiving services from NSW Government agencies, statutory bodies and certain community-service providers, including the government’s response to COVID-19.
