Background

The European Parliament has received a large number of petitions related to various aspects of plastic waste and their impact on the environment in the last years. In its resolution from 2019 based on citizens’ concerns, Parliament stressed that “waste management is one of the main global socio-economic and environmental challenges” and reiterated its call “to maximise prevention, reuse, separate collection and recycling with a view to boosting the transition towards a circular economy”.

On 10 February 2021, Parliament adopted a series of policy recommendations on circular economy. The report calls on the Commission to introduce clear standards and targets on material use, product footprint, design and recycling, and to tackle plastics in a comprehensive way, including specific actions on packaging, single use plastics and microplastics.
