A delegation of the EP Committee on Petitions will be in the Mar Menor region in Spain from 23 to 25 February to meet with petitioners and local decision-makers.
After receiving several citizens’ petitions expressing concern that the Mar Menor, the largest lagoon in Spain, is suffering from degradation, the Petitions Committee will investigate the situation on the ground.
On Wednesday, MEPs will meet with six petitioners, followed by Murcia regional authorities, including the head of the regional government Mr Fernando López Miras. Next, they will speak with mayors from the region and Spanish national authorities. MEPs will brief journalists on their first impressions Wednesday at 16.30 CET.
On Thursday, the delegation will travel to Mar Menor to observe the situation first-hand, and meet with scientists, local NGOs and business and trade union organisations.
The visit finishes on Friday, when MEPs will exchange views with spokespeople of five parties in the Murcia regional assembly, as well as scientists. There will also be a press conference starting at 12.30 CET.
For more information about the press events, please contact Damián Castaño. For these two events, remote participation or attendance will not be possible.
