The 10th anniversary was widely noted elsewhere, including in an official note by Justice Minister Simon Hughes saying that more than 400,000 requests have been made under FOI laws in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since they were introduced 10 years ago.The Campaign for Freedom of Information issued a statement saying the law “is being undermined by the increasing use of private contractors to provide public services.”

BBC reported on the anniversary, as did others. BBC also published an article about 10 things discovered through FOIA requests. David Higgerson wrote about the value of the law and exhorted journalists to use it more. The Manchester Evening News recapped 10 “revelations” it had published over the decade based on FOI requests. Also, an article in The Register by Gareth Corfield.

The truth is that the FOI Act isn’t used, for the most part, by ‘the people’. It’s used by journalists. For political leaders, it’s like saying to someone who is hitting you over the head with a stick, ‘Hey, try this instead’, and handing them a mallet.
