The Equality and Human Rights Commission have published a strategy setting out what needs to change and who needs to take action to reduce gender, ethnicity and disability pay gaps.

The recommendations are based on new evidence from research by the Equality and Human Rights Commission into the size and causes of these pay gaps, and whether interventions so far have been successful.

The Commission is calling on UK, Scottish and Welsh governments and employers to address pay gaps in a comprehensive and coordinated way.

This report is primarily intended for UK, Scottish and Welsh governments and employers, but will also be useful to anyone working towards improving equality in gender, ethnicity and disability.

Inside the Report

The strategy was divided into six main recommendations, which are:

  1. Unlock the earning potential of education by addressing differences in subject and career choices, educational attainment and access to apprenticeships
  2. Improve work opportunities for everyone, no matter who they are or where they live
  3. Make jobs at all levels available on a flexible basis
  4. Encourage men and women to share childcare responsibilities
  5. Reduce prejudice and bias in recruitment, promotion and pay decisions
  6. Report on progress in reducing pay gaps

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has welcomed the latest Healthwatch England report, which looks at the experiences of people who receive care delivered within their homes.

Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, Michael King, said:

“We welcome Healthwatch England’s report on the quality of homecare providers. Our own review of social care complaints showed that for people receiving care in their homes, it’s often the little things that mean so much to them in maintaining their dignity, independence and a good quality of life. Consistency of care is vital to those who rely on these services.

“Comments, compliments and complaints should be an integral part of any provider’s quality monitoring and improvement planning. Care users and their families should be confident that any feedback they share about their care will be responded to appropriately and that their providers will use any learning to inform service improvements.”
