Ombudsman received the Members of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights

The Commissioner for Human Rights, Sabina Aliyeva received the delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe (PACE) Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, led by the Committee Member, Konstantinos Efstathiou. The member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan and deputy head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, Kamal Jafarov, attended the meeting as well.

During the meeting, S. Aliyeva provided extensive information on the Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the history of the establishment of the Institution, and the Ombudsman’s mandate. It was said that one of the obligations undertaken by our State before the Council of Europe was the establishment of an ombudsman institution. The Ombudsman said that the Institution marks its 20th anniversary and added that the Institution improved its work by taking into account international standards in past years.  

Outlining the importance of cooperation with the Council of Europe, S. Aliyeva gave broad information about the activity, implemented as part of the Regional Project "Strengthening access to justice for victims of discrimination, hate crime and hate speech in the countries of the Eastern Partnership" carried out jointly by the Ombudsman Institution.   

It was noted that during the Project, the Institution’s staff increased their knowledge and professional experience on how to combat discrimination and were given information about the work done to expand the Ombudsman’s mandate in this direction.

The guest thanked the Ombudsman for her cordial reception and highly appreciated the work done in further development of cooperation between the institutions and discussed future cooperation prospects.

El Diputado del Común, Rafael Yanes, y la adjunta segunda, Milagros Fuentes, visitaron la Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado de Las Palmas (CEAR), para conocer en primera persona el trabajo que desarrollan desde 1979. Fueron recibidos por el coordinador territorial, Juan Carlos Lorenzo, quienes les habló de la misión de CEAR que es defender y promover los Derechos Humanos y el desarrollo integral de las personas refugiadas, apátridas y migrantes con necesidad de protección internacional o en riesgo de exclusión social.

Desde CEAR dan atención directa e integral a las personas refugiadas en diversos ámbitos: desde la acogida, inserción laboral y la atención psicosocial, hasta la defensa jurídica y la denuncia para avanzar en el reconocimiento de los derechos de las personas refugiadas. CEAR cuenta con centros de acogida a personas solicitantes de asilo y refugiadas, donde se les facilita un espacio para avanzar en el proceso de su autonomía y la plena integración social. Proceso en el que son acompañadas por los equipos profesionales multidisciplinares de atención social, psicológica, jurídica y laboral. CEAR es una entidad de referencia en materia de derecho de asilo, trabajando directamente con las personas refugiadas, migrantes y apátridas.

The Ombudsman visits Fadd-based mothers' shelter

The Commissioner for Fundamental Rights paid a visit to the Fadd-based group home of the Tolna County Child Protection Centre on 17 November 2022. 

The Ombudsman was received by head of the institution Dániel István Wettstein. 

There are two group homes in Fadd, one of which is a mothers’ shelter, where mothers under legal age are given the opportunity to raise their children in a safe environment, supported by experts.

Judgment of the Court in Case C-69/21 | Staatssecretaris van Justitie en Veiligheid (Removal – Medicinal cannabis)

A third country national who is suffering from a serious illness may not be removed if, in the absence of appropriate medical treatment in the receiving country, that national risks being exposed to a real risk of a rapid, significant and permanent increase in the pain linked to that illness

A Russian national who at the age of 16 developed a rare form of blood cancer is currently receiving treatment in the Netherlands. His medical treatment consists, inter alia, of the administration of medicinal cannabis for analgesic purposes. The use of medicinal cannabis is, however, not permitted in Russia. (...)
