For the European Year of Youth, the European Commission organised a Family of Policy Dialogues, bringing together young people and EU Commissioners to engage in meaningful conversation on relevant policy initiatives. As part of this series, on 24 May, Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, hosted the fourth policy dialogue on “Equality Bodies that work for all us”. The dialogue, in which I was honoured to participate as presenter and panellist, aimed to bring youth perspectives on the upcoming legislative proposal for minimum binding standards for Equality Bodies, focusing on building bridges between Equality Bodies and youth to raise rights-awareness and address under-reporting.

The Protector of Citizens requests that the RGA provide access to the e-cadastre and the e-desk

The Protector of Citizens determined that the Republic Geodetic Authority (RGA) acted improperly and illegally when it prevented independent geodetic organizations from accessing the e-desk and e-cadastre, even though it did not fulfill its obligation to decide on their complaints.

On 26 July 2022, Amnesty International issued public statements on the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border. The organisation pointed out that while Latvia had accepted 34000 asylum seekers from Ukraine, people from Iraq and Afghanistan, including children, were left in the forest on the Latvian-Belarusian border for months during cold weather which, according to the organisation, indicates inhumane treatment and even torture. Amnesty International considers that an extension of the emergency situation at the border with Belarus should not be allowed, as it restricts access to international protection for persons in need, regardless of their origin and the way in which they enter the country.
